As you work on a page of sentence completions, the first column typically has the eas-ier questions. However, if the first column seems like a walk in the park, the second col-umn is certainly no picnic！ The second column （the last three or four questions especially）contains the heavy-hitters, the hardest of the sentence-completion questions.
Part of what makes sentence completions hard （in additionto their more complex sentence structure） is the level of vocabu-lary in the answer choices. On hard （level 4 or 5） sentence com-pletions, it's not uncommon to find words such as vitriolic,didactic, and ocdusion. Unless you spend your free time readinglane Austen or Charles Dickens, to join the 2400 Club you haveto get serious about learning some hard words.
Back to keeping "level-headed": If you are on question 2 ina sentence-completion section and you are spending lots of time"reading into" the subtleties of the sentence and its grammatical syntax, you're probablymissing the point. There is probably a simple, straightforward solution you haven't seen.Chances are that this question is only a level 1 or level 2 （easy）.
Conversely, if you are on the last question in a sentence-completion section and you think the answer is obvious, you'remissing the point again. Most likely, this is a level 4 or 5 question,and the answer choice is a difficult vocabulary word with a sub-tle cntext clue or clues to support it. Most of the time, the cor-rect answer to a hard sentence completion is a very hardvocabulary word. For example, on the October 2004 PSAT, cor-rect answer choices to hard sentence completions included exe-crable, unctuous, vitriolic, and obfuscation. Hard questionstypically have hard answer choices. The correct answers are,most often, off-the-bell-curve words such as leviathan, sybarite,anathema, and untenable.
Top scorers are not easily daunted. They don't sit around obsessing abut all the hardwords they don't know. Top scorers don't take a self-defeating attitude such as, "There's aninfinite number of words that could possibly appear on the SAT. I can't learn all of them,so I'll never get those level 4 and level 5 sentence completions." Instead, 2400 Club mem-bers build confidence and bolster their verbal scores by amassing an upper-level vocabu-lary. When it comes to hard sentence completions, top scorers understand that, even ifthey don't happen to know myopic, amalgam, or hubris,* they can eliminate the otheranswer choices whose definitions they do know and whose definitions they know don't fitthe blank. 2400 Club test takers focus on what they know and maximize that knowledge,letting it work for them as they reach their maximum potentials. To give yourself the bestshot at a 2400, know your Hot Words for the SAT （Barron's）, and learn the words listed inAppendix A at the end of this book. ……
